Tanning
Formic Acid
Formic acid is used significantly in leather production — including tanning — and in textile dyeing and finishing, thanks to its acidic nature.
In leather processing, compared with other acids used for different processes, formic acid has proven to be much more efficient in tanning operations and in fixing dyeing and retanning agents.
Formic acid ensures efficient, homogeneous leather tanning in industrial processing. Production involves pre-treating the leather, which leaves it in an alkaline state; but tanning requires acidic conditions. Without this step, the tanning agents may fix too quickly on the surface of the leather and fail to penetrate the inner layers.
It is also used as a coagulant in rubber production and in place of mineral acids for various cleaning products, among others.
Our technicians are available to advise you on this and many other chemicals so your processes shine.
